From what I have read on this forum in the past, the engine management light should go out on it's own after a certain number of successful starts without an error. Off the top of my head I think that is 10 starts.

The fan on my T4 doesn't come on until 102 degC.

Alternator-wise, I think it is always supposed to charge at ~14v, but doesn't normally vary that much. Someone here may tell you more, but I would be asking questions like you as well.

Mmm, as I say, when I hit a medium bump in the road, manhole, drian, and the like, on comes the engine management light AND the TCS light. The TCS light goes out the next time the ignition is off'd and on'd but the engine management light can stay on for between 3-6 starts.

It's got to be a connection issue as its been doing it for 15000miles and car not disintigrated yet, but I suspect it's something that will take a long visit to the workshop to find the connection causing the bother, and put it right!

Buy yourself a scanner. You can check the fault code so you know what the problem is AND you can reset the engine management light yourself. No dealer extortion!

Default Thanks guys but!

Any more ideas on the engine management light, will it go out after ten "no fault" starts or do I purchase my own scanner.

Can anyone please tell me what one to buy,how much it will cost & where I can purchase it,I am not an E-bay user so a motor factor would be easier. Also are they easy to use as I am a complete novice, but like saving money!

Any ideas on a good independent Volvo garage in SW London/Surrey area. Is there still one called MKG 3000 Volvo in Twickenham & if so does anyone know if they are any good.

Hope you can help,

Dave.

Our local independent Volvo specialist in halifax charges £16 for code reading/setting. It's only a 5 minute job.
alternator charge rate is fine, and so is the cooling temp.

Hope this helps

regards,
Nick

Default Problem solved

Many thanks to everone who helped, you are geniuses!

It was the pin in the temp sensor connector that was at fault & now after approximately 10 good starts the engine management light has gone out by itself.

The alternator is still charging at around 13 volts but I willl have to see how that develops over the winter.

Thanks again,
Dave.
