I'm having a simular problem with my S40. I only ever seem to get 300 miles to the full tank. 55 lts. Can anyone help. What are the best steps to take. Car has just been serviced.
If it's a thermostat or something what exactly should I ask for when I go to my Volvo dealer. It's doing my head in. Might as well buy shares in Shell with the amount I spend on fuel. Please help |

300 miles on a tank is a bit expensive - I did manage 485 miles once but I put over 60 litres in afterwards.
Try replacing the thermostat & temp sender (thermostat doesn't throw a code, not sure if the sender does), it's a cheap DIY job. Now I've done mine I get well over 300 miles before the low fuel light comes on without doing any major journeys (normally about 12 miles). I'll really find out next week as I'm off to North Wales which is a 200+ mile run.

Cool, last question, I'm not very mechanically minded though. Do you think you could explain how I could do this or will I just get my local mechanic to do it?
Roughly how much should the parts cost me? |

Even from a dealer you'll pay about £15 for the thermostat and £35 for the sender. You have to remove the thermostat to get at the sender anyway. Probably a 10 minute job for a competent mechanic - but make sure the engine *is* cold before you do the work....
If you don't want to do the work yourself an independant should be able to. Low fuel light came on @345 miles on this tank.....

High fuel consumpson
Hi,
I have a 99' V40 2l turbo automatic and I reckon £10 of petrol is getting me approx 55 miles, is this average or could it be put down to the sensors that were mentioned in this link? I know petrol is expensive but £10 cannot get me 60 miles. Please advise, thanks. |
