Default Cam Belt

I have a 1999 V40 1.9TD with 83,000 miles on the clock its been serviced regularly and the cam belt changed as recommended. Sadly the cam belt has now decided to fail. The question is how much damage am I going to find when the engine comes apart or is this going to be beyond economic repair?
Any advice or previous experience welcome.

well, it is hard to say, but it can be everything from bent valves to valves braking and putting holes in pistons, debree scratching the bores. If you got away lightly you will need a few new valves and a couple of pistons. Just have a look, take the head off and you will see.

the question I have to ask, is why did the belt fail?

How long ago was it done? If not long then something was done wrong, or something didn't get done.

As for damage, well that depends on the speed you were going and the revs of the engine. I had a belt brake once (year old) on a Ford escort, and I was only doing about 20mph at a fairly low rev. Bent 4 of the 8 valves, and snaped the camshaft. Nothing else damaged.

Hope nothing much is wrong with yours.

Default V40 1.9Td cam belt failure

Unless anyone tells me different, the 1999 V40 1.9Td used the Renault F9Q engine, and for some of these engines, Renault warn dealers to change the cam pulley at the same time as the belt. Volvo don't do this!

If its the old reno lump (TD on bootlid) then they usually smash themselves to bits

I've seen these engines snap valves when they have had cambelts fail,

Get it stripped and have a look, theres plenty of cars with these engines in so bits won't be that hard to find
