Maximum Distance on Space Saver Wheel
Hi,
I went to get new tyres for my 'X' S40 2.0T the other day and also to get a slow puncture looked at. It turned out that the 'slow-punture' was actually a crack in the wheel I have managed to find a replacement wheel but for now I am on the space saver. The wheel wont be with me 'til Monday. I have had a trip planned to Guildford this weekend for a while now (I live in Suffolk so about 150 miles) My question is: Would I be completly mad to attempt this 300 mile round trip using the space saver (O/S/R)? I would obviously keep to the 50mph max speed and would consider stopping periodically to let the tyre cool down if it is heat build-up that is the main issue. Your comments / advice please. |

My neighbour has been running around on her's for over a month, its a focus, but same difference, personally i wouldnt even have one of these about me, but its personal choice, not for any safety reasons. In answer to your question, i dont foresee any problems other than the reduced speed limit, it it not 50kmph though not 50mph???

I know, I would not have one ideally but I cannot find an adequate steel spare. They only made 15" steels for the S40s and finding one from another car with the right stud pattern has proved difficult / impossible.
There is a big yellow sticker on the side which says 80kph/ 50mph so I am sure the speed rating I gave is correct. |

Oh, was just saying, i thought they were 50kmph, but go with the sticker!!
Any 4 stud Volvo fits them i think mate, mitsi as well, i think they are 4x108 stud pattern, but i'm sure someone on here will be able to correct me if i'm wrong

I think they are 4x114.3 but I still haven't managed to find one. Any ideas where would be the best place to pick one up?
Do they even make steels in 16"? If I could only get a 15" what would be the closest tyre to match the rest (205/50/16)? To be honest, I reckon I'm gonna risk it, it's just I've heard you should not travel more than 50miles at a time on these 'get you home' tyres. lol |

I think your right about the 114, sounds fimilar, i'm not a fan of the 40's tbh lol
Fleebay is usually goog for that kinda stuff, usually plenty of breakers, not too sure about tyre size, spe4ak with your tyre suppier, but tbh, anything close would be better that a space saver

Ok, I have been to the breakers and the best we could find was a 15" rim with a 195/50/15.
Obviously this is not ideal as mine are 205/50/16. In fact, on a 'tyre calculator' it says: Stock tyre (205/50/16) Sidewall: 4.0 in Radius: 12.0 in Diameter: 24.0 in Circumference: 75.4 in Revs/mile: 840.3 New tyre (195/50/15) Sidewall: 3.8 in Radius: 11.3 in Diameter: 22.6 in Circumference: 71.0 in Revs/mile: 892.4 So does this mean the new tyre is spinning 52 times more per mile than the others?! If so, will this be doing serious damage to the diff? I can not find anywhere to work out the difference between 205/50/16 and 125/90/15 (the spacesaver). What do you all reckon? |

As long as the two front wheels are the same diameter you're ok.
Just put the oddball on the back? |

If you wanted to be really fussy i'd say 195/55x15 or 195/60x15, but tbh, its alot better than a space saver, and i really cant see it harming the diff, the diff is designed to spin a different speeds, sure if you've 2 unevely worn tyres, ie new and old, sure there would be a difference in speed anyway.

The differential sun gears dont rotate at all with the correct tyres they arent designed to continuously rotate , just slowly "move" when cornering . With such a difference in wheel circumference they will be continualy rotating which may well wear their thrust washers , this may well cause the ABS to work all the time as well ......
