Water Spots on my 1800
I have had a long battle with water spots on my 1800s paint. If you look online you'll see many tips about different ways to remove them and indeed how there are different types of spots...mineral spots; etched paint spots, "ringed" spots etc. I've tried vinegar, mild polishing compound and others but none did the trick like this "MX-7 Plus" stuff I bought. I had used this years ago and it worked great but with a HUGE caveat: it etches glass!!! I almost ruined my front windscreen with this stuff! I had to laboriously polish out the lightly etched glass so heed my mistake! (It's got hydrofluoric acid in it - a hardcore acid).
But today, looking at the spots, I decided to use it again but keeping it off any glass or bare metal. Stuff is amazing! Every spot is gone. The paint looks like glass. So if you're near the ocean like I am and water spots got you down, try this stuff out. It's odd as I see it mainly sold here in Hawaii - but I'm guessing you can get it shipped anywhere. Interesting that after extolling all of its wonderful virtues and abilities, the last line says "MX-7 PLUS will NOT remove etched in water spots on clear coat."
Clear coat is just another layer of paint so how come it can't do what it says it can do, on clear coat. Maybe because its much too hard. Glad your paint is now looking good John. Get several coats of good quality wax on it and then a couple of sealer coats on that. Usually best if the wax and sealer are from the same company. Being where you are, Meguiars might be the brand to go for. Wax and sealer will protect you from the problem. Keep the car clean and redo the treatment now and then. Park it out of the sun when you can. Keys posted Thursday 13th. |
