Default Full road test of S60 D$ VEA in latest Autocar

The latest Autocar has a full test of the S60 with D4 VEA - they rate it VERY highly, and say that the engine is better than the current class benchmark, the BMW 320d, as it's quieter, smoother, quicker, more economical and with far lower emissions.

Autocar's own test-track figures showed how punchy and flexible the engine is:

0-60: 7.6s

In 4th gear:
30-50: 4.6s
40-60: 4.6s
50-70: 4.8s

In 5th gear:
50-70: 6.9s
70-90: 7.7s

I think the engine is getting universally praised. What most of us are now waiting for is real mpg figures, whatever the car, S60, V60, XC60. If they come in at a respectable level then link that to the praise for how it drives and Volvo will have a real winner on their hands.

I would post a link, if the test was online

@ Harvey, I forgot to check the Autocar test mpg (which includes performance testing etc). In the test write-up, they did say their 'touring' route of A-roads and motorways saw 50+mpg without trying.

I'm guessing that second time should read 40-60 not 50? Otherwise it's actually quite slow

I've seen 3 of these now and fuel consumption has been 49 - 52 mpg showing on those particular cars ... now this being a new car and new engine it's not going to be driven gently , people are exploring its limits .. and it has yet to bed in . so much better results later no doubt .

Some real world mpg figures - I've just completed the first 250 miles in my D4 VEA XC60 Geartronic. For this week's daily 30 mile round trip commute (in stop-start traffic for most of it), with an around town school run on the way each morning I'm averaging 39-40mpg. For a new car I think that's fairly good. I haven't had the opportunity to do any motorway trips so can't comment on that.

Better than my previous XC90, used to struggle to get 23mpg out of it......

Looking forward to trying my real world mpg out next week. Pick the car up tomorrow, then it's a weekend of local stuff followed by around 1000 miles of mostly motorway next week.

Will report back next Friday - plan it to brim it after picking up then again before the big mileage kicks off on Monday, so should have early town and cruising mileage numbers in the first week.
