Just to clarify, the injector leaking is usually very slow to the point that it will take several hours/a day to cause a problem, so you would need to usually leave it overnight and then start the car up when the weather is warm, such as after mid-day. It's hard to get a conclusive result in British winter.

Re-starting when the engine is hot is usually not enough time for any serious amount of fuel to leak from the injectors.

This is the most common cause of rough running that only happens for the first couple of seconds after startup, other than glowplug related faults. If you are sure that your glowplugs and glowplug controller are good.

Another (less common on D5) cause of this can be coolant leaking past the head gasket and getting into cylinders when the car is left for a few hours so you get the rough running for the first couple of second as the coolant is cleared out

Thanks for your input. What you have mentioned definitely makes sense... I suspect leaking injector(s).

Again, I think its one of those things that'll be on the back burner. The car starts and drives fine - Its just a bit lumpy for a few seconds on initial startup from cold.

Potential repair for future, that's if my Dad still owns it when it becomes a bigger problem.

I am just about to do my major service this weekend and I have a new genuine Volvo fuel filter to install. The last one I put in is a Mann filter (supposedly suppliers to Volvo) and it has occasionally started poorly in cold weather since then - not something that ever happened before. I'll see if it makes a difference.

If it's a coincidence - and the problem isn't solved - then I have ordered a set of 5 new Bosch Duraterm GLP144 glow plugs which I will install later. The originals have done 170,000 miles (well, I haven't changed them in the 100,000 miles of my ownership), so they haven't done badly!

What is the average life expectancy of Injectors?

Diesel injectors should last 100-150k miles.

I'm on originals at 168k. I managed to refresh them by running the car on 5 litres of diesel purge

My 07 D5 was also running rough for the first few seconds in the winter after first start of the day. Even after short trip, the rest of starts were normal. Doesn't really do it now as the weather got warm. Could it be glow plugs although there's no codes and resistance are all the same and below 1 Ohm? Guess they are still the original though, could they be weak nonetheless? Or injectors are a more probable cause? They are original too. Car has 190k miles on it. Thanks for advice.

I changed the glow plugs on my Dad’s car. It made it start better, but the rough idle didn’t go. I think injectors are more likely to be the culprit.
