Hello to the Volvo world.
Bought a 88E 240GLT 2316cc 5 speed Est. at auction on 25th july. 128k miles 2 previous owners, 6mnths mot!....£262.00 all in. Taxed on Friday. windows/mirrors work. Radio cassette works. Looks to have been undersealed. Sometimes it pinks a bit. I get that petrol tank fuel pump whingeing for ten mins after start up. Tracked and balanced the front wheels and........ Its a steam train !!!!!!!! Bit Like driving my "World of Leather" sofa!!Oil light is a bit lazy, but when it goes off it stays off !
Bought a Haynes of e-bay for £6.50 all-in, to look after it a bit.
Anybody out there tell me if I can adjust the timing to remove the pinking. There does not appear to be any timing marks on the crankshaft pulley! can I just rotate the distributor a smigin to retard the ignition.
I'm off to search the tech forum now......Regards.. Whydidibuyit.

Sounds good to me.
Cure for the oil light, change the oil, and fit a genuine Volvo oil filter, only a bit more than an aftermarket one, but has a non-return valve in it to stop the filter emptying when the engine is off. Most aftermarket filters don't , so the oil pump has to fill the filter every time you start before it can develop any decent oil pressure!
Try 97/98 four star before you fiddle with the timing, and as great one suggested, replace the injector seals, simple job and cheap too. I stuck a bottle of RedeX through mine to clear the muck out of the valves etc, seemed to help, but might just be wishful thinking.
Most people seem to do the timing by rotating the distributor until it sounds right!
Plus, anitalian tune up might blow a lot of the carbon out of the heads, which will help the pinking too.
Do check when the cam belt was changed. 4 years/40000miles. £9.85 for a new belt, genuine Volvo with the timing marks printed on it! (£9.55 for a Halfords one, I spent the extra 35p for the Volvo one. Haynes tells you how to change it.
