Default Steel wheels and hubcaps

Just planning ahead and thinking about the wheels on my 240

They are of the steel variety in 14" with the original plastic covers

With previous 240's I had ditched these and gone for alloys - either Virgos or the kind fitted to Torslander models

I dont think I want to go down the alloys route this time

Im thinking that if the steels were painted black they would look good with chrome or SS hub caps covering the central part

This sort if thing is outside of my experience so forgive me of this is a daft question!

Will the standard steel wheels take an old fashioned type hub cap of any description? Or would I need to find older pattern 240 steel wheels?

I think I am right in saying that the latter black wheels are the same patten as those from 1979 - so would fit the two part quite flat centres, that cover wheel nuts as fitted 1979-1980, also the domed chrome ones that just cover the bearing dust cover, where the wheel nuts show, they would have been domed chrome nuts with those. The earlier 74-78 one pice chrome Centers that cover the wheel nuts also had clips that fitted into holes in the center part of the rim, the holes wil not be in your rims so couldn't fit those. Also something else to note, if doing the exposed wheel nut setup, those cars didn't have the little peg sticking out to locate the wheel, so in the latter car that peg sticking out may look odd.

So, the larger metal hub caps from '79 onwards would pop straight on then

Thanks this is helpful - just off to compose a 'wanted' post.......

Default 15"

I've progressively changed all of mine over to 940 steel wheels. Very cheap, usually devoid of rust and 15". Tyres very easy to obtain - I go for 185/65x15 on a GL. My GLT is off its Virgos for the winter and uses winter tyres 195/65x15 on 940 rims.
Plastic covers can be found or you can paint them metallic light grey over the brown/black undercoat.

The two-piece flat caps don't actually attach to the wheel, but to the hub.

There is a groove round the hub and the outer part of the cap has lugs which clip over it. Then you press the centre part in, which expands the outer ends of the lugs causing the inner ends to tighten their grip on the hub.

IMO they look really nice on the 240 as a retro-change from the usual rather commonplace alloys. The wheels look nice in white on a white car, or in traditional pale cream as a contrast on a darker car.
To really set them off get a set of chrome rim-imbellishers, which clip into the outer circumference of the wheels, with a cut-out for the tyre valve.

Would these fit straight on?

If they did then I thought that perhaps with the addition of some chrome wheel dome nuts and white paint applied to the steel wheels things would look good

Opinions please!

Yes they should fit, they are the domed ones I was talking about, need chrome domed nuts as well though!

Like the plates, they fit on the hubs, not the wheels. AFAIK all the axle hubs are the same.

Does anyone still make them (perhaps as pattern parts) or is there a similar generic type cap available does anybody know?
