I just have mine set at level 3 on auto, and select the temperature I require and it looks after itself, rarely hear the fan running but it works fine, fan will work between zero and level its set at as it feels it is required to maintain the required climate. If you turn auto off fan will run at the level you set.

yes, had it completely not work once pre software update. Just blowing cold air yet temp set high.
Turned car off and back on and never happened again. |

I had a “problem” on my Jag X Type. Climate set to 20, cabin would heat up and then when it got to temp, start blowing what felt like cold air. Had to keep turning it up to 24 to get it to pump warm air. One of the reasons I decided to get rid.
But then the other day I had the same on the XC90. Maybe I just need it set to 24 the whole time!

It could be that you are not used to the Volvo way of doing climate control. The fan setting you have on is max blower setting and if the brains thinks you are fine it may run it at low fan, turn up/down the temperature to tell it you not fine. In terms of air temperature that it will blow, it has this concept of perceived temperature which basically thinks it knows better than you so you have to keep adjusting the temperature to defeat it and get heat when you want heat instead of a faceful of cold air. Just one of those things. Also a con with 4 zone climate is that the fans are only for back and front so your fan speed will change if your front passenger adjusts their temperature by a lot.

I had a reason to query the way the climate system worked a few years back and it was explained to me like this.
When the car is cold, and you have the climate set to say 24 degrees, the car will prioritise the warming of the engine, before warm air is passed through into the cabin. So for a mile or so, the car gets little or no heating. Once the engine is warm enough, warm air is passed into the cabin to the lower vents, i.e. the ones by your feet, to allow that air to rise through the cabin. Once the car reaches the correct cabin temperature, dash level vents will always blow cool air. This, apparently is to keep you awake. All of this can be overridden by taking it out of auto mode, but I’m pretty sure that even then, the dash vents still mix fresh air with the warm air.
