Most likely because there's miles more diesels than petrols of the S40/V50/30 range. For what it's worth they aren't all bad, mines on 167k and beyond routine servicing all its needed is 4 wheel bearings and an alternator.

It is a diesel C30! And I specifically chose Volvo's own engine (over the various Peugeot diesels available) to try and avoid such problems.... But no. I'm 23 and fancied a Volvo which more reflected my age, but turns out I'm more than happy with a V40 again... and it works properly without rattly Ford bits of trim.
