Default 2004 Volvo V40 Headunit Upgrade

In the past, on previous Volvo's I have had (01 S40 T4, 99 V40 XS) the upgrade was simple, just an ISO adapter and aerial converter.

I recently acquired a 2004 V40SE with the subwoofer in the boot. I purchased the aforementioned converters and now I am only getting treble. I know this is because the sub is amped and feeds the 5.25" speakers. My question is, do I get one of these?

My headunit is an Alpine IDA-X100 with 3 pre-outs, so I can use two of those for the boot amplifier. However, has anyone successfully bypassed the amp, and fed the speakers direct off the headunit? Does the amp act as a crossover for the tweeters?

HI i removed the Volvo head unit from my SE, i have the sub/amp (No CD changer) and used the leads below, i only had a HU605 (?) but to the best of my knowledge everything works. My current HU as an Kenwood KDX-557 and before that a Phillips, same leads! Hope it helps!

Default Look before do anything

Look at the back of your existing stereo first. It should have 2 iso type block connectors , one for power and one for speakers and an aerial connector. If you have one of the connectors shown in the ebay item , then yes you need that lead as its an unamplified feed from stereo that goes to amp ,where the iso type blocks feed amped signal straight from stereo and will damage amp if fed into it

Got it working. I happened to have a brand new dolby cable from my old C70 in a drawer, that worked fine. My headunit (Volvo one) has two DIN connectors though, one with 5 pins (the amp cable) and an 8 pin one. Any ideas what that one is for?

What I ended up doing is connecting the RCA's for the rear sub to the sub out on the Alpine, that way I have independent bass and volume control for the rear. Sounds ok, next to upgrade the speakers!

Think your other plug is for the CD changer for the boot. (more toys)

Default DIN Size...

So i'm also looking into replacing the existing HU-655 in my 2004 V40 (after giving up on properly fitting a Parrot MKi9200).
I've got the external amp model audio system, so I know i'm going to need to put together or buy the female DIN to RCA's cable so that I can plug them into the aftermarket unit as well as the ISO adaptor.

The unit I want to fit is this one: http://www.pioneer-car.eu/eur/produc...specifications

My main question is, I have heard the the double DIN housing can be a little 'non-standard'. Am I going to need to modify the housing in any way?

Any insights would be appreciated!

Cheers.

This is related to my post on getting aux out from the HU/Grom I need the same splitting out aux, but also need passthrough for the original DIN cable to the amp

Maybe worth buying one of these cables to see the pinouts and hacking my cable....?

You *may* need to think about passthrough from the amp back to the front door speakers, which I am sure happens somewhere in the chain. I have a feeling that they don't work unless the amp is plugged in.

I'm not 100% sure this is the right cable for your HU either -- it's not a Dolby system in the x40, but the C70 line below and the wide coverage implies that it'll be OK for you. Maybe worth a try.

Volvo C70 2001 - 2006 with Amplified HU models
Volvo C70 1997 - 2001 with Amplified SC models
Volvo S40 2000 - 2004 with Amplified Dolby Systems
Volvo S70 2000 Onwards with Amplified Dolby Systems
Volvo S80 2004 Onwards with Amplified Dolby Systems
Volvo V40 1996 - 2004 with CR902 Amplified Head Units
Volvo V70 2000 - 2004 with Dolby Systems
Volvo V70 2004 - 2007 with upgraded Dolby Systems
