Goldie costing me more money!
Found out today my wheel bearing at the front is knackered, my CV boot is split, and I need a lower-ball joint. The parts aren't that expensive, but the labour is my concern!
Now on 124k fast approaching 125k! Suppose I can't complain that much since its all wear and tear :P

Not fancy changing them yourself? Obviously the wheel bearing cant be done at home (unless you have a press but I doubt many people have them at home) CV boot and ball joint aren't too hard!

CV boot is a piece of cake, depending on which side it has failed. IIRC the passenger side is a lot harder to change than the drivers side.
The wheel bearing shouldn't be too bad, nothing too much to worry about |

Ooh it's not nice when you get a suprise like that. Well worth keeping the old busses going though, as it could be a C30 (*cough* Ford Focus *cough*) with 60,000 miles on the clock and a failing dual mass flywheel. That's why I'm back in X40 town now, oh yes.
I saw my old R reg V40 the other day and it's still battling strong with over 150K. Edit: Oh and speaking as a garage Mechanic myself, front wheel bearings on most FWD cars (including X40's) are hateful things to do as you HAVE to use a press. However by the time they've removed the hub to change the bearing, they're 80% of the way there to replacing the CV boot and lower arm. So most of the labour costs will be tied up in doing the bearing. Therefore absolutely no point in doing the lower arm and boot yourself, and then getting the garage to do the bearing as they'll have to unbolt everything you would of just done. If you haven't got a press or mechanical knowhow, do as you're dong and get em' to do the lot. Last edited by martin93; Jul 27th, 2016 at 23:46. |

Good point raised above. Got my quotes.
All in for the Wheel bearing - £110.00 CV boot - £55.00 Ball joint - £62.00 The wheel bearing is driving me mad though haha

Anytime I hear the words Dual mass, I immediately go to a diesel ... :P
The petrol C30/S40/v50s seem to have the least problems :P
