Top Gears not selecting
Hi not been on here a while which means good news for the V40!!
Just started having a few issues with selecting top gears (3rd mainly) its like its not quite reaching if that makes sense, which clutch down I'm getting a crunch and then eventually it goes in on second attempt. Sometimes it pops out of gear to. Runs well once in but I'm worried its going to get worse. Ive heard a lot about linkages and wondered if this could be the issue? Thanks Kev

If reverse is top left you have the Renault box. Renew the linkage bushes and all should be good. Plenty of guides on here on how to do it.
If reverse is bottom right you have the Volvo box, if this is the case, I have no idea. Another contender for the frequently asked questions sticky.

I have a diesel V40 and third gear is bit recalcitrant too.
I'd say on mine that it is worn synchros as if you do not rush it and make sure the clutch is fully depressed and the engine revs and road speed are not completely mismatched, then it goes in fine. I would check that you don't have a mat or anything stopping you from fully depressing the clutch pedal and also that the clutch is bled (described in various posts on the forum). It does sound like you could could have a cable or linkage issue which is obviously better than a gearbox issue!

Most of the early boxes can get link issues that new bushes will correct, but if this is one of the better models, like a phase 2 diesel, it's unlikely to be a box fault and could be a worn out clutch. I doubt if low box oil level or the wrong oil would cause a gear selection failure, but it should be checked anyway. Most gearbox failures are caused by secondary effects of a worn clutch that starts to slip when in gear, or crunches the gears. Bad oil (Change every 100K Km cam belt serice interval for severe service) or low oil level.

Hi all
I've just checked and its bottom right, so I guess that means Volvo box? It's a 53 phase 2 model
