Summarising these, it seems the only 'non-criteria' would be medium-distance journeys at a moderate speed with few gear changes. How many of us do this ?

Incidentally, as a manual driver, does this apply to me ?
I don't know, is the short answer about the manual.

I think it may be possible in the USA in areas with low traffic density and a 55mph speed limit. Defiantly not the UK.

Also forgot to add short journeys to the list.

This suggests the concept of 'service indicators' which are fitted (I think) to BMWs, would provide some indication of driving style and the triggers for additional service actions. Otherwise, what is the dealer expected to do ? Ask the owner what sort of driving they do ? I have never been asked this. All they know is I have done x thousand miles since my last visit, but not whether it is motorway or urban taxi work.

Sorry, could you explain a bit more what you mean? Why about what?

Thanks.

This is all a bit off topic but quite interesting (especially given the number of people affected).

I'm curious if people who have had their transmission oil changed to address issues have also noticed an improvement in MPG?

I didn't but I always got my oil changed regularly, before it got too bad.

After having a 2012 S80 D3 for 2 yrs I decided to get a new one. Started with 2 yrs old BMW 5 series (525D luxury) ride was fantastic but road noise was deafening and then again test drove a demo car 520D luxury but same results. Sound meter showed almost 2-3 db more on same road.
AUDI A6 didn't have enough space at back. Transmission tunnel was too big for 3rd passenger to sit comfortably.
Merc E-class was most non-responsive car I have driven. Floor the paddle and the car wouldn't move at all.
Having already owned a Passat, I was not convinced about the build quality matched my current S80.
Finally after all the research, I got a 65 reg S80 with new D4 engine. And I couldn't imagine how different the car is. The whole chassis is very settled and boaty feeling that I had with my previous S80 is completely gone. Excellent tech as well which can't be matched by any German rival at this price.
I am not a fan of any car or any loyal but objectively looking at all the other cars and my priorities I couldn't find any better car than Volvo. Unless any other new version of sedan by other manufacturer comes along I will be getting a Volvo each time.

I have.
I first had a V40, then a V70 which I sold 4 years ago.
Had a Mondeo Titanium X for 2 years (nothing but trouble) and a Mazda 6 sport (185bhp) for 2 years which never gave me any trouble at all.

This afternoon just picked up a used V60 D4. Quiet. Comfortable. Looking forward to finding out how to use everything.
