Clutch failure at 31,500 miles!
Has anyone else had a problem similar to this? At just over 31,500 miles, and owned by me for less than 3 years having been “pre-registered” the clutch failed and I was told that the problem was due to the way I drive the car, and the problem was not covered by warranty. I have been driving for over 42 years, and have driven numerous cars in that period, often for many more miles than in this instance. I have never had a clutch problem with any car I have driven. There has never even been a suggestion that the way I drive has affected any aspect of the occasional car problems I have had. I cannot help but feel that I have been fobbed off by both the dealer and Volvo Customer Relations who just refer me back to the dealer.

Are you the original owner? How was described the clutch failure by the Volvo technician?
The usual ways a driver will damage the clutch is when 'slipping' the clutch between the gears or when keeping the clutch pedal depressed at a light. Also when 'dropping' the clutch, usually in more sportier vehicles. In other words, if the clutch plate is burned, worn, has a broken spring or the clutch bearing is worn, then it's driver's fault. For anything else, it's not his fault.

Not a Volvo, but lost a clutch on a Peugeot diesel at 22k miles. replaced by Peugeot, even though they said it was worn out under warranty. Honda Accord diesel, clutch at 24k miles. Changed by Honda under warranty, as caused by master cylinder not releasing and causing slipping, although undetectable. Other than those, never lost clutches, even in company cars being ragged from cold to dark and getting binned at 150k miles.

I have read of other instances of low mileage clutch failure on newer volvos on this forum. What was there explanation of the failure? They have to give a reason.

Yes, need to know how it has failed.
Had my 2012 V70 D5 clutch replaced under warranty as it was slipping. Don't know what models are affected, but there have been problems with clutches from 2010. New clutch has modified friction material and some wear adjustment sensor. |
