Body/Trim: Window Outer Scrapers Fitting Guide Volvo 240

Fitting new outer window scrapers to 89 240.

Decided to tackle this little job yesterday whilst the weather was good. Easier than I thought it was going to be, the condition of my 34yr old original ones was very bad. Brittle, dry and split all over. I bought the set from Brookhouse just over £20 https://www.classicvolvoparts.co.uk/...ts_and_Buffers

Please ignore green mould haha, currently in process of working through and deep cleaning etc. Hopefully will be tackling the satin black bands that are all cracked and split too.

Split and Cracked:


Front doors have securing tab at opening edge, these need releasing. Front edge just sits under wing mirror housing. Rears have one at each end:



Working from one end gently work along prising the scraper trim holder upwards:


At this point you can grab and lift it from one end, make sure you pull straight upwards, don't flex or bend it:



New scraper rubber top, removed scraper in the trim below:


Profile of replacement rubber is superb:


Note how short the original rubber has become. This is most likely down to drying and shrinking over the years. This allows the water inside the doors:


Look for these two dimples, they hold the rubber in the channel, you need to trim the rubber around these dimples and open the track with a screwdriver to release the grip:




Once dimples have been released slide old scraper out:


Clean out the track where the rubber slides into, I used some silicone lube to help it glide back in. Once fitted, don't overstretch it before you re-press the dimples back together. Trim the ends a little longer than the metal trim:



All done ready to refit:


Refit is same in reverse, use silicone lube or similar to help it fit over lip. I cleaned the area before fitting. Press along until it clicks into place:


All done.

Nice and satisfying easy job. I removed the drivers front door card at the same time as I wanted to check the central locking. Lower quarter of the door card has been badly water damaged over the years due to water ingress. Hopefully stopped this from getting worse.

It is useful to cut the new seal longer as they will shrink over time:~
If you do a search then you should find some further details relating to the rubbers and profiles that can be obtained at descent prices away from some inflated rates for the same.

There weren't any dimples on mine. They slid out with a bit of effort and back in with some wul. Mine are the earlier stainless type.

The dimples are just an aid for holding the rubber extrusions:~
The black trim is actually painted stainless so can be changed if you wish.
