Timing belt
Firstly sorry this is probably something that’s been covered quite a lot, I’ve done a search and found loads of very useful information on here about timing belt changes, however I just wondered are there any common issues folks have encountered or what to look out for.
I’ve brought a gates belt kit and a genuine Volvo water pump, I wanted to do the pump as the car has just ticked past the 200k mark and despite having two belt changes already (80k and 155k) there’s no evidence of the water pump being done, there’s a few points I would like some advice on please At the last belt change they also put a new aux belt on, tbh having looked at the belt it’s still perfect but I’ve had three folks tell me the aux belt is very much a weak point and fail very regularly destroying the engine, are these really so bad? One alleged expert says they need changing every 10k minimum!! . The other point I wanted advise on is how much harder are the mk3 v70 2.4d to do?, again the “expert” said the mk2 d5 was one of the easiest cars cars to do but on the mk3 it’s way more involved, personally I’ve had a good look around and it doesn’t look much harder, the top engine mount looks like it needs more attention but certainly nothing major, so I’m getting concerned there could be electronics that need resetting once everything is done. I’ve brought the crank holding tool as I’d rather spend £12 than struggle and break something. The car is a 2010 2.4d 175 (none swirl flap 😃 Thanks Gary |

did my old 2011 couple maybe 3 yrs ago
engine mount off top-one small nippy bolt in centre, rest is a dawdle i used a kit off a volvo dealer with new bolts etc[ebay] I did the aux and tensioner/belt too with original parts[same ebay vendor]-left the waterpump alone as it had only done appx 180k and had no bearing wear and was the original car was on original timing belt-may have been changed at 30k ish with head gasket job either way timing belt had done at least 150k along with rest of kit-was still all good aux belt on the other hand was near shredding simple enough to do if you are methodical and reasonable mechanical know how-needs a big range torque wrench for bottom to nip it up -and the holding tool too |

I did the belt and aux on mine in 2018/9. I also did the water pump too.
There is a belief that the Volvo water pump basically lasts for ever. When replacing mine I noted that the metal impellers had absolutly no erosion, the bear Ning felt new and it looked identical to its replacement so I buy into the belief it’s long lasting. However I didn’t want to leave it on given how inexpensive they are. I used a mixture of the Haynes manual and so robs YouTube video and found it easy. The AUX belts used to be each 108k and they had a failure rate. I am not sure the failure rate was high however when they did go they would damage the engine by damaging the timing belt. I would continue to change belt at 54k. I will personally change my belt and tensioner each 54k, again due to how cheap it is for the piece of mind. |

The P3 platform isn’t much more difficult, you may need to include the a/c stretch belt if fitted, the 2.4d is the same as the D5.
The aux belts can damage the timing belt if they fail, with obvious consequences, that’s why they’re changed twice as often at 54k and that’s all you need to do.

Thanks for the replies, seems reasonably straightforward, I didn’t get chance this weekend, but did change the rear shocks……..200k+ and they were original 😳

Ugh, P2's timing belt are relatively easy.
P3's aren't that bad either, Just THAT stretch belt. Be careful, It does bite. I did the usual "roll belt and turn pulley to get it off, same to put back on. |

Sorry to drag up an old thread,I’m finally getting around to doing the timing belt this weekend, it’s been put off due to not using the vehicle but as of Tuesday it’ll be doing a 55mile round trip commute every day.
The issue I’m having is locating the correct aux belt, can anyone shed any light on the correct belt I need, ecp, gsf are quoting different belts and the dealer came up with another one, doing it over the weekend I don’t want to be getting the wrong one Gsf are saying its 6pk 1050 Ecp 5pk 1592 Volvo 5 1132 Very confusing 2.4d 2010 Any help would be great Thanks Gary |

Tbh I don’t cut corners on things like that, however I have no worries about going down the gates or dayco route for the belt, I’ve used these on many cars in the past, I’ve brought many genuine belts only to find they’re either gates or dayco.
It’s documented that the belt and tensioner were changed at 160k in 2017 so I’m going down the route of just the belt this time (aux) Interestingly the Volvo guy I spoke to said the failure on the later tensioner is extremely rare, but for the cost I really don’t want the risk tbh, equally he told me it was a waste of money changing the water pump, but at 202k I’d personally rather change it, again given the cost |
