Default Rear Axle ID

I have sourced a spare axle with the idea of refurbing it to replace the whining axle that is currently fitted to my '65 1800S.
I have a couple of questions that I could do with some help with:-

1. In trying to identify where the whine is coming from - It whines constantly although it seems to be road speed related. If I take it out of gear and coast in neutral - the whine continues - so I have discounted gearbox and overdrive issues. But I suppose it could still be -propshaft bearing, diff, or rear wheel bearing issues. Does anyone have any ideas how to test to try and isolate and identify the problem?

2. The spare axle is a little different from my existing one - At the rear it doesn't have a removable plate - rather it is a solid plate that has been welded on (from original by the look of it). It has "ENV" moulded into the diff carrier face and a serial number - but no other makers ID. Otherwise the external fittings /lugs etc. seem to be the same as the one fitted to the car. How can I identify if this axle and its ratio etc. is correct for my car?

Thanks in advance.
