Hey there I'm fairly new to the forums, posted a few weeks ago and got great replies and support from everyone so I'm hoping for the same now.

Just decided to purchase a 2007 S40 d5 geartronic, has a 120k miles on it and went to inspect and test it today and was happy so collecting it on friday (hopefully the 2 pictures have uploaded okay). Anyway this is going to be my second car, I'm upgrading from a 2003 1.2 clio so definitely a big jump.

I was wondering if anyone had any advice/tips/words of wisdom, been trying to do as much research as possible about them and dropping it down to my mechanic after collecting it for a service and gearbox fluid change just so I know that it has been done and when. Also and advice of any changes or mods I could do to it to improve it? There's two small scratches on the passenger side and one of the parking sensors is black instead of silver which are the first few things I think i'm going to sort after the service.

Any and all replies would be appreciated and I'm looking forward to joining the owners club officially haha. Thanks again, James

Make sure you have evidence that the timing belt, Aux belt and tensioners have been changed. If not you'll need to get them done.

Get the sunroof drains checked as a priority. There is a problem area at the bottom of the windscreen pillars where the pipes shrink with age, become detached from the elbows that direct the rainwater outside of the car and then flood the interior that in many cases will require the removal of all the carpets and often also cause future electrical issues.

I had this issue with my wife's '55 S40 (pipes had failed completely) which required all the seats and carpets to be removed and have the CEM cleaned to resolve electrical gremlins (another common issue). Also had issue in my own '04 V50 but looked at this immediately after I bought it and caught it early enough that I didn't have to strip the interior.

The problems (and solutions) are documented in detail elsewhere in this forum.

Good idea to get gearbox fluid changed. Volvo say it is 'sealed for life' but what they don't tell you is that the life will shorter than you would like if you don't change it. Got issues with my V50's gearbox (geartronic) where the 'slipping lock up' feature is malfunctioning and I put it down to this not being done until it started to give issues. It uses special fluid because of this feature but I am sure your mechanic knows this already if they are any good.

Yes I've read a few places about the gearbox fluid so wanted that to be one of the first things I got done I've read about the sunroof drains as well. I did check the car before I bought it and couldn't see any damp patches on the pillars or in the footwells, is the only way to check the drains taking the roof liner out?

I only removed the covers off the windscreen pillars as the pipe had shrunk and become brittle with age at the end nearest the firewall. For the S40 I also removed the rubber elbows and cut off the star shaped end as it was blocked and brittle but they were a major pain to get back in so for the V50 I just removed them completely and made the pipe longer to compensate.

Check that geartronic works in the manual mode.
This was broken on mine, its just a case of replacing the shifter blind under the selector but its about £ 35 for the part and takes a little bit of work to replace it.
