The duct tape on intake hose is to seal a small split in it.
Does anyone think that the fault could possibly be just a dirty throttle? |

Fix For Fault Found (details)
The fix for failing to start/rev once hot (1999 v70 2.5 petrol) was to remove the distributor and clean the distributor and rotor arm contacts with the blade of a screwdriver.
It now revs correctly when hot. Prior to cleaning contacts the motor died as soon as the accelerator was pressed then struggled to start again while still hot, and only when cool again started reliably. Steve Sarre, Luxobarge, Bob Meadows, 4X4 diagnosed it right. Thanks guys. |

Great stuff, well done. However, I'd strongly suggest replacing the dizzy cap and rotor for decent quality new items, as clearly they are both past their best. Ideally original Volvo items but these are quite expensive so if you don't want to go that route i'd recommend ones from PFV online, their stuff is usually OK.
Thanks for posting the result, it's always nice to know what fixed it in the end.
