photo of front fly window
Could anyone post a pic (or a link to a pic) that shows the correct orientation of the catch on the fly window in the front doors of a 164? The catches are off mine and I just want to make sure they go back on the right way!
TIA Fran |

I haven't got a close-up piccie of mine (can arrange if required), but from what I hear from the myriads of people who have a similar problem, whatever adhesive you use to re-fit your old ones, it won't last! People hae tried Araldyte, No-nails etc but conclude the trick is getting all traces of the old adhesive off, and thorough cleanliness before sticking them back on.
Charles Ware t/a The Morris Minor Centre, at Bath, Somerset, market clips to replace catches that have failed on Morris Minor quarter-light windows. I have heard they are quite good and don't rely on adhesive, but although I haven't tried them they may be worth considering. My only question is - Minor 1/4 lights are smaller than Volvo 140/164 - can anybody confirm they do the job? Paul |

I was thinking of using some of that mirror bond stuff thats used to bond a rear view mirror to a windscreen. AFAIK its the only thing that will hold metal to glass. Glass must be dry and cleaned before use (remove glass and clean with acetone, clean metal the same way and don't allow the acetone to get on anything else or it will stain it).
I would be interested in learning more about those clips though - sound like a good solution if the other thing doesn't work out. If you have time - a pic would be great, just to get the positioning right. Fran |

You're right that it's the best stuff to clean the surfaces with though... and don't stint it, it's cheap, use plenty of it, not just a damp rag. I precede the acetone stage with roughening the surface with fine emery paper, which is sufficiently hard to abrade glass and produce a micro-roughened surface. I've tried that glass bond stuff and it fell off again after a bit. So far Araldite is holding. Epoxy ought to be able to bond chemically to a sufficiently well cleaned and prepared glass surface, though whether you can actually get it to do it is another matter I thoroughly prepared and cleaned the surfaces as above using emery followed by acetone, then glued the catch on, clamping it up with a G-clamp padded with some bits of wood, carved to the shape of the catch on that side so it didn't slip off, and left it for 24 hours with some gentle warmth, I estimate the temperature of the assembly (not the surroundings) as 35 deg C. With two-part glues mixing them really really thoroughly is always worthwhile. As to orientation, the long bit of the catch is more or less parallel with the window frame when it's closed. For positioning there's the circular mark where the old one fell off I drew another such mark on the other side of the glass with marker pen so I could still position it after all traces of the old mark had been obliterated by the cleaning process (and was then careful not to get acetone on that side of the glass!) |

Yep, tried it and it just fell off. Heres an interesting thing though - the shaft at the top that the window pivots on had also come detached from the glass and I glued it the same way and it worked AOK! Well, it hasn't fallen off yet and it got a bit of manhandling this evening, in and out a few times.
Looks like the morris minor clips mentioned above are now an even better way forward! Fran |

That's interesting, my 164 is also K-reg but it has little L-shaped ones that rotate when you push a button... same principle as the Amazon ones but a different pattern. Original Morris Minor ones are also L-shaped.

No Pigeon, I think those ones are the morris minor replacement ones - Is that correct Mike B?
Mike B: Another question - do they pull in the window enough so that wind noises are quietened down? My 164 original ones are as you describe, L-shaped with a button. Fran |
