XC60 gearbox issues
HI all,
bought a 2011 XC60 SE LUX premium D5 auto about 5 months ago. I've had a running battle with the garage about a gearbox fault that started 4 weeks after we got the car. It keeps firing up 'Transmission service required' on the dash. Fault code is TCM-P-074100. (Solenoid not working.) So far we have had:- Gearbox oil changed by my own garage. £125 Gearbox fault codes read. £48.60 Gearbox Adaption's done by Volvo. £177.50(My own garage won't do the adaptions.) Gearbox oils changed again by company that sold the car under warranty. Free I'm now being asked to take the car back and they want to change the oil again and have additive put in the box to help the seized solenoid/piston start working. Volvo have said it needs a new solenoid valve control system as one solenoid/valve has failed. Thats £1286 for the part alone. The garage that sold the car claim they have gone to Volvo, tried to chat to them to do a trade deal but are confident that it's just a stuck valve and and a gearbox oil change plus additives will cure the issues. I've read that its a known fault with these gearboxes and it's a new part. Anybody else on here had the same fault and what happened to you car to solve the issues? Did you have a new part or did your garage get the Control system working with oil changes? |

The problem is it may well be the Valve body.... but if it's not then a whole lot of cash is wasted and you still need a new gearbox.
Doing the adaptation process alone was never going to fix this. Do not accept a solution where additives make the problem go away - it's likely a temporary fix. Volvo specify that no additives should be used.

Things heating up....
Well, things heated up.
The Volvo is the wife's car and I gave her the information I had. She called the dealer that sold us the car..... it wasn't a good phone call. I've chatted to my own garage and they agree that Volvo don't suggest additives to go in the box. Look like its a £2,000 bill for a new valve body and hope the rest of the gearbox isn't rubbish. What's also interesting is this 'Transmission Service Required' comes up, you stop, turn the car off and its gone from the dash. After 3 times the message comes up and the engine management light comes onto. After 3 days the whole lot goes away and the car drives fine with no warning messages. The first oil change the old oil was black and 'gritty.' The second change the oil was also 'gritty.' I know the first oil was genuine Volvo and the oil my garage put in was genuine Volvo gearbox oil. I have no idea what the last oil was put in. Could be stuff with an additive in. The whole thing is a mess. That's for sure. It's a shame as it's a lovely condition car, exterior and interior wise. Runs well on the road and motorways apart from this 'Transmission Service Required.' Last edited by Old Wobbler; Mar 21st, 2019 at 18:39. |
