Apps and GPS are not as accurate as you think. The satellites look at your position on the surface of the earth but may have difficulty in allowing for the contours!

Not talking mountainous regions, but it's a known fact that GPS speed is more accurate than a speedo, I even googled it beifr ei posted to make sure I was correct sill

OK in Lincolnshire and Norfolk but not so good in Wales and Scotland.

My sat nav shows the volvo to read 2 mph fast on new tyres in Wales. Arguing the point is useless with our local roads policing team, if they nick you are nicked and will stay nicked so best make sure you are reading at least 1 mph under the limit to be sure, oh and the limit starts at the gateway signs, not when you have coasted down to it. So do your slowing before the signs. Apart from that, have a nice holiday and please leave the lurgi at home as we've no hospitals worth speaking of either.

I dont think our hills are enough to throw out the GPS, GPS is based on horizontal distance, you will find that the speed is based on that, going up or down hill will make no difference as long as its not a sheer vertical drop, as its based on horizontal distance, thats whats measured, whether going up or down, its still basing the speed on last movement. Now, GPS measuring heights, thats totally different, its very poor unless you have an RTK GPS system, perhaps thats what youre thinking of, height measuring?

There's a mathematical difference between horizontal distance and the length of the road on a hill, but on a 1 in 6 hill I make that about 1.4%, on a 1 in 10 incline, probably more relevant to normal use, that difference drops to 0.05%, on a 1 in 100 that's down to 0.00005%.

Basic trigomometry really , the latest navigation units are now taking the Contours of the map into consideration when measuring distance and speed from GPS data .

Sounds like a guess?

I really do not think contours would play apart for speed calculations, its been fine up til now using the same method for years, do you have any think I can read about it, I can see contours being useful for the drive ahead though, ie serious inclines and declines, especially for towing etc, but I really cannot see it for speed calcs, why add millions more data points into the software when its not really needed seen as speed works just fine.

It just my opinion on the subject and I must point out, I am rarely right.....
