Default Altenator Pulley

Hi,

Can the altenator clutch pulley (think this is what they called it) be replaced in situ on a D5 or does the altenator and power steering pump have to be removed to gain access?

Noise has been getting worse over the last couple of days and it looks to be seized (it is the part that rotates or drives in one direction and freewheels)

Thanks,

best to take the alternator of as the pulley is very tight and there isnt much space to work in and they are easy to get of but would do it as soon as cos if it chucks the belt of it can be very expensive when it gets wraped up in the cambelt

Is this likely as it can't be replaced until Monday earliest (wont be high mileage 100 miles tops) - should the belt also be replaced?

I believe the commonest cause of cambelt failure is it getting taken out by the auxillary belt failing. You'd probably then be looking at a replacement engine.

Had exactly the same problem crop up this morning the local garage I used confirmed my thoughts and will be replacing parts on Monday, very false economy not to replace the belt with a new one as when the pulley sticks part of the belt is getting shaved off with the prospect of imminant failure. Their advice for usage was, not to....fortunately I am only a mile from the garage and it ain't going no further til its been fixed...........
