Default 960 Royal?

So, whats so special about the 960 Royal?

I am in the process of buying a 960 here in Turkey and the car has 2 little badges on the rear quarters with the 3 crowns. Googling 960 Royal shows a few pictures of this badge but they also suggest it was built for the Japanese market?

Never owned a Volvo before so looking for some pointers on the 960 Saloon if anybody has anything good or bad to say about them.

It was aimed at the Japanese market as a luxury executive motor. Engine and gearbox were as for the standard car.

Additional 6" of legroom in the rear.

Separate seats in the rear (not a bench type seat).

Central console type fitting for the rear with additional controls built in.

Separate air con /climate control for the rear.

Specially appointed rear seat separator (could contain cool box etc) depending on customer request I believe.

Good, comfortable cars with a bit of that luxury feel. Top range models (and the Royale) were well appointed with what would be 'extras' on lesser breeds. Bit thirsty but worth it for the comfort.

Well I dont have the seperate seats and rear control console but the car appears to be extra long with huge amounts of rear legroom even with the front seats pushed back.

As far as 'extras' go it seems to have everything other than the dual zone climate control, it has standard AC controls. It has the premium audio system with a working remote control though!

So, maybe it isnt a Royal but a top-spec car built for the Turkish market and the Royal badges stuck on?

So something a little bit out of the ordinary then? Not that you see too many Volvos on the roads over here anyway other than some new stuff appearing now. Seen a 740 Saloon nearby but other than that nothing else of interest.

Mind you, SAABs are somewhat thin on the ground too, the only 9000 I have found has a blown headgasket and seized turbo, the owner still wants 10000TL though (£4400ish!)

The 960 comes out at about £6500 which if compared to UK prices is obscene but you cant buy anything cheap here so when you compare 14500TL against 13500TL for a Golf 1.6 of the same age I dont think its such a bad deal after all.

if it's a ROYAL, it's rare..., the £6000 price tag does seem a bit high for a 960 Royal, but if it's in showroom condition it'll be a different story, I'm assuming it's a 96/97 model... lots of Volvo enthusiasts would like to get their hands on a Royal, I've got an 98 S90 Exec II which people seem to want to get their hands on too (pics in my gallery)

as for the badges being 'stuck on,' I'm pretty certain that they are placed with adhesive pads like most car badges, and Im not about to remove my S90 badges to find out...

as for your first Volvo, you won't be disappointed, give it a try because you will sell it for what you pay for it because of it's rarity...

Things arent going entirely to plan at the moment. The dealer phoned me yesterday to confirm all the required repairs had been done and the car tested. Went to the dealership but due to beaurocracy and TAX in Turkey we couldnt complete the paperwork (everything is done in a Notary, nothing is done through the post here).

Anyway, took the car for a test drive to confirm certain things had been done and within 5 minutes the engine stalled on me whilst I was moving. Got the car out of the flow of traffic (sort of) and as I had the owner of the dealership with me in the car I handed him the keys and told him I would be back once the car was fixed and properly tested.

The reason given for the failure is that the car was not running on LPG although the system thought it was 'live'. Its thought the LPG Filter is blocked due to poor quality fuel in this country and their fascination with running about with less than 1/4 tank of fuel all the time. When the LPG failed there wasnt enough petrol in the tank to keep the car alive so it stalled and failed to re-start.

So, waiting for a phonecall now and an afternoon visiting 3 different offices in the area to complete the paperwork on the car now.
