V50 2.0D offside driveshaft 06 plate
Hi all,
V50 is in garage for wheel bearing replacment. Just had call to say that the driveshaft also needs replacing. Does anyone know where to get a driveshaft that is cheaper than Volvo's main dealer pricing? Anyone have a decent second hand one spare? I've been quoted £300 from the garage. Rapidly losing faith with the V50. Had it since February and seems to have no end of issues. Have an old V70 1999 and it just soldiers on. It's pretty joyless and horrible to drive, but it goes on, and on, and on... Thanks! Sam. |

Well, it's a possibility, but what can I do? I wonder if the Ford Focus has the same drive shaft?

worth ringing a few car parts places as many now do exchange units.

FRF Volvo (google it) are on the forums and do parts direct... should be cheaper than what a main dealer will try and ream you for it.

make sure yoiu find out exactly what is wrong with it , my bet is they have damaged the inner tripod joint taking it out to do the wheel bearing and getting you to pay for their mistakes . V50 driveshafts are bullet proof as they say ...!

Thank you, people. Good advice coming from this forum. I have been meaning to post my fix for 2.0 starting problems for a few weeks. Will get around to it very soon...
This is turning in to a sticky situation. I did consider taking it to me nearest Volvo main dealer which is a bit of a journey and work commitments made it difficult. "How difficult can replacing a wheel bearing be?", I thought to myself. Why, I coud even do it myself if I had the time, so 'll just take it to the local independent and they'll do a nice job for a fair price. I've been there before and they've been great, and honest. Is it really that easy to damage the "tripod joint"? could it have been damaged due to the wheel bearing problem? It was getting very grumbly even at low speeds. Had the car since February. First it was starting problems, and I almost got into the depressing loop of visit to the dealer where they couldn't find a problem only to get it home again and find it wouldn't start. I took it upon myself to fix this and 3 hours of filthy work later I did. Then someone crashed into it. Repaired under their insurance so ok. Then someone crashed into it again but did not own up to it. Nice scrape down the side. Then bird muck managed to eat through the lacquer on the bonnet when we were away for the weekend. Then the alloy somehow got scuffed. Then the wheel bearing goes. Followed closely by the drive-shaft. Jinxed, or what? Tempted to sell it, cut my losses, and get something like a Skoda - a car that seems to be properly engineered, not lashed together from nasty Ford bits. My 1999 V70 sits next to the V50 laughing at it, I'm sure. |
