Slightly off topic, but talking of tyres etc.

I saw a lowered Golf today, driving over those yellow lines telling you to slow down (approaching a roundabout) and it was lowered so much, the guys inside looked like he was in a liquidizer !!

I barely noticed the lines lol !

The R-Design also comes with Speed Dependant Steering as standard, which is nice at slow speeds, but gives a little less feel at around 30-50mph in my opinion. Active Xenons are nice item to have as well, but more use around dark, bendy, country roads, rather than in London.....

Get down to your local dealer and have a drive in both!
There is a big differance in the two models driving dynamics and its not just down to the wheel size. Cant speek for the new exec but the old one was super comfy. The R'design has stiffer anti roll bars and is a harsher ride but it does handle superb. I like the seats blue clocks, three spoke steering wheel and the look of the R design myself. Just not the 'no spare wheel ' now.

Just come back from boat'n'caravan show and they have an xc90 along side an xc60 and it was a suprise how much bigger the 90 was next to the 60.

Bri, Just personal oppinion only .!!

You've answered yourself really. If you prefer looks over comfort get the R design. If you want smoothness, comfort and the ability to iron out London potholes get the SE. If you want a bit extra comfort take notice of Ian and specify 17" wheels for the SE.

I remember the first demonstrator I drove was an active with 17" wheels, this was the best ride of them all.

I'm no bothered about a sporty ride, just smoothness, comfort and the ability to iron out London potholes. I'm guessing the SE would be the sensible choice but I much prefer the look of the R-Design.

i usually just toss a coin its quicker.

Thanks for all of the advice guys - sounds like the SE with the smaller whells for me. Which of the alloy options are most recessed from the tyre edge (i.e. scuff proof) - 18" camulus, 18" situla or 17" neptune. Also, any suggestions for SatNavs which can be permanently mounted (including power) other than the list option (which I think is very overpriced).

Not sure about recess but you are less likely to kerb the 17"
Simply because it take a higher pavement to Do so

I have the Camulus 18" which is standard fit for the SE, the wheel sits in a fair way from the tyre, you would have to do something very dramatic to mark the wheel.

The outer face of the 17's is slightly recessed compared to the 18's I believe. You can see this if you take a quick look at one of my photos further down in this thread..: http://www.volvoforums.org.uk/showthread.php?t=116739

They're still pretty large tyres though even on the 18's - pays your money takes your choice. Go with what you like the look of and watch out for high kerbs :-)

Cheers
Ian
