Default 2005 D5: Intermittent "Engine Service Reqd" and no boost

Hi

I bought a 2005 D5 a couple of months ago, seems to be turning out to be a bit of a lemon though

Intermittently, I get 'Engine Service Required' - when this message appears, it seems the turbo stops working (I think - I'm not mechanic-y but I can't hear turbo whine, and there's no boost). It was suggested that an oil/filter and fuel filter change would help, but since having that done it's still happening.

If I turn the engine off and start up again, the turbo is working just fine, as if the computer has reset the message or something! It maybe happens on 10% of journeys.

Any ideas how I might diagnose it without throwing bucketfuls of cash at my nearest dealer?

Thanks

Buy an ELM327 dongle and the Torque Pro app and read the code yourself, then take it from there.
The fix is most likely a cheap one.

Also check out Mikes (Outnumbered) very helpful thread relating to boost code 6805. It's one of the green sticky threads on this sub section of the forum. If your car is Euro 4 then there are other things to check for as well such as the swirl flap arm.

I had a look at that but it seemed I needed fault codes for it to be useful. I've bought a code reader so I'll see what the beef is and check back in...

Thanks all

Well it took ages but finally got hold of a code reader. The only fault it had logged was P0244 - Turbocharger wastegate solenoid 'A' range/performance.

A quick search of the interwebs says this could be a few different things, and one guy took it to Volvo and they said the code was wrong, and in fact it was a leaky engine mount!

Sounds like just diagnosing this one might be a bit of a PITA...
