id be checking the r/h headlight ground point for corrosion/other as its shared with the wiper motor as a "well buggger me id never have thought That would do this" which your haunted wipers seem to be heading in the direction of , as spikes /etc in the system can apparently fry the WMM (window module motor )

for the time/effort to check and "nope not that" ,, has to be worth a try ?
This is very interesting. Thank you!

On previous internet trawls, I saw the link between wiper problems and aftermarket HiD lights, but discounted it as I don't have HiD.

HOWEVER, I have very recently had to replace the RHS headlight bulb.

So I will look into this tomorrow

As said above, WMM and headlight wiring shares the same ground points, hence the unfamous WMM+HID issue and few people reporting fried modules. Before Andy, nobody actually asked you if you have aftermarked HIDs installed or any modification to headlamps by any chance?
I don't but I'm going to follow this up. Thank you.

Well, the ground looks OK.

The wipers have gone crazy again though.

First of all, not working when I switched them on

Then, coming on of their own accord and not responding to my attempts to swith off.

In the mix is an intermittent fault code: P0194 Fuel Rail Pressure Sensor A Circuit Intermittent/erratic.

So, the fuse is out again

Hahaha.. I think you're right. New motor time I think.

Driving around with the fuse out and a cloth in the footwell to clean the window is just not a good solution. Especially as the weather has just got worse and I have some long journeys planned.

A couple of years ago, the AA recovery driver who came to fix my Vectra said that he only buys Volvos as they never go wrong.

So I bought this S40

Just out of curiosity, would you agree that the earth is ok here?

aye that looks ok for earthing
if you Wanted you could loosen them both, clean up the threads etc and pop back together with a bit of conductive lube and tighten the bolts (not over tighten )

but as is ,, looks decent enough to me

been a thunkings on this (its bugged me but not as much as its bugging you!)

the contacts inside the motor itself,, not for the comm/brushes but the limit switches and the contacts for those,, **usually on one of the gears that drive the wiper linkages, can be 2-3-4 sprung copper contacts and a contact disk/plate on the gear,, they are clean and not corroded arent they?

the contacts Should be behind that big nylon gear

an xc90 motor stripped to show the contacts im referring to , and the condition they shouldn't be in

sadly it means motor off the car and taking to small bits to see /check, and if so cleaning up, re-lube,, Re-seal so water doesnt get in and rebuild onto car to see if its been exorcised yet,,

https://www.theeshadow.com/files/volvo/wmm.html Volvo P1 WMM Repair S40/V50/C70N/C30 may also be worth a look/read

(is your car called Emily rose by any chance :P )

Thanks mate. I appreciate your ongoing interest!

I bought a new (used) motor from eBay and fitted it yesterday.

No change

The only other thing which I'm going to investigate is this wiring.

It looks like the previous owner replaced the motor at some stage and, well, I'm not quite sure what this is all about...

Have they fitted a different unit to the original?

God knows what's going on. Yes, I may have to call in a local priest to perform an exorcism !!

The code reader is generating a 'P0192 Fuel Rail Pressure Sensor Circuit Low Input' error. Can I be 100% sure that this is not related?
