Towing with your XC
Hi! Just interested-what's the heaviest/furthest anyone has towed with their XC90?
I am working on the idea of towing my boat to Portugal, trailer weight will be minimum of two tonnes, probably slightly more, but less than the 2250kg allowed. If it happens it will be Newhaven-Dieppe and 1500 miles or so through France and Spain to central PT. Has anyone experience of using the car to tow these kind of distances and weights? Interested to hear any hints/tips/comments. Cheers |

Could you add a bit more info pls, is it an Auto or manual box and what year.
If its an auto I think there could be an added trans cooler needed, but most of the motorways have gradual slopes so may not be a problem, perhaps ask Volvo themselves what they recommend. John |

I towed a horse float once with one horse. Thats around 1500 kgs
Tows with ease with my D5 diesel. But of course you do have to be aware of (up to) 2 tonnes sitting behind you when you are braking and cornering. PS: the horse was in the float, not towing it

52 plate auto. Ran like a dream.

Did woolacombe last year, 2 adults, 2 kids, 4 bikes on roof, boot full to roof and probably best part of 1800kg caravan behind, did journey perfectly until hit the inclines going into woolacombe.. Overheated gearbox going and on return... Once hit the motorway on way back performed faultless even with gearbox service on dashboard.

I towed a 500 Kg trailer with a 1.5 ton V50 on it (2.0t in total) from Edinburgh to Hull one afternoon. This was in a 2003 D5 auto with about 150k on the clock at the time. No issues at all.... and got out the other end without any aches or pains.

I have towed an 1.8t caravan all over Europe many times, including crossing the alps. There is not a better tow vehicle.
However if you have not towed before you should not tow such a heavy load without training.
