Default Speedometer problem

Sometimes the speedometer is working or trying to work on my 1986 Volvo 740. Other times no reading at all. Milage is 70,000 miles backed up by a service history. The wiring to the sensor on the differential looks fine, no loose or frayed wiring, and the plug at the instrument panel looks good too. (VDO instrument cluster). One mechanic says I need to change the sensor, another mechanic says the sensor is fine and the problem is in the instrument panel. ??
Has anyone had this problem with their 740 and if so were they able to have it fixed. Very frustrating. Any help would be appreciated.

Default Mods. Move this into the relevant section please?

Camillus,
There is a wealth of info. in the 700/900 section re this type of problem courtesy of forum members. Try doing a search in that section.
My 940 receives the speedo. signal from the sensor in the diff. If the odometer is still working normally then there is a good chance that the sensor in the diff. is ok.
