Default Different Tyre Sizes F & R

My latest V70 (2008 2.4D) has two different tyre sizes.
215/55 R17 on the rear and 225/50R17 on the front.
Is there any benefit to having 2 different sizes?
I’m wanting to get new tyres. All matched. I think the 225/50 R17 is the manufacturer fitted size for my model?

The burning question is "Why does it have different tyre sizes fitted and who did it?"

I’ve ordered some 225/50 R17 tyres. W rather than Z though.
Might as well make the most of the spare cash I have not having to pay nursery fees
