New D4 VEA Engine Fuel Economy?
Afternoon All,
Now that there are a few D4 VEA Engines out there and presumably a few miles being covered I wanted to get a feel for the kind of fuel economy people are achieving. If possible can you put the following information: Model (i.e. V60/S60/XC60) Gearbox: Urban Percentage: Extra Urban Percentage: Overall fuel economy/average on last tank: With the figures quoted in the Volvo literature always being a bit optimistic I would like to get a feel for what is the real life economy. Unfortunatly as the supply of the new D4's is still fairly limited we don't have any on as demonstrators so I can't do this for myself!.....ask me about a V40 D2 and I'll tell you all about it though!... Thanks in advance Marc |

Hello Marc,
Nearly all my driving is Extra Urban. I picked up my car last Thursday with 4 miles on the clock. Reset everything and on the 107 mile drive home on A roads, the D4 averaged 57.9 mpg. Since then I have been playing around with everything and mainly with the engine ticking over. Today I have averaged 51.9 mpg, with 330 miles on the clock. Please note, this has been achieved with stop/start disabled. I am soon off on a trip to Italy and will update the forum on mpg. By the look of things, there should be a vast improvement over the V60 D3. When I exchanged the D3, the Trip Stastics, stated that 2975 miles had been driven at average of 49.7 mpg. tem.

Model: XC60
Gearbox: Geartronic Urban Percentage: 30 Extra Urban Percentage: 70 Overall fuel economy/average on last tank: 39/39 Ok..... So, yes, it's probably going to be the lowest of the new D4 engines. I've only done 1800 miles, and the first 700 I did were very eco friendly (averaging 52/53 mpg). That was using the eco button where possible, and really trying hard to drive as best as possible to eek out every last bit of mpg! However..... Since then, I've completely flipped it on it's head and used sports mode excessively, caring very little about mpg, and more about fun (within the laws of course). The mpg drops like a rock once you get past 55/60 mph (which you should average around 58mpg). Above that, it drops quite dramatically to low 40's on a long run at higher average speeds. Couple that with short journeys around town where you enjoy the acceleration off the lights etc, and you end up with 39mpg for the tank (about 550 miles to a whole tank).

Model: XC60
Gearbox: Geartronic Urban Percentage: 40 Extra Urban Percentage: 60 Current overall fuel economy using Fuelly 40.4mpg Economy is great when around 50-60mph, bit less on a long motorway run when I got 47mpg at average 75mph last week. On my commute I get around 45mpg, but the short school and shopping runs around town drop it to about 39-40mpg. Ok, the mpg is not spectacular, but for a large SUV and automatic transmission it's pretty good. I think the benefits with the new D4 are the combination of great performance (0-60 in 8 seconds, and it feels fast), low road tax and the mpg. Overall, very pleased with it.
