Default Tailgate close button not working

Hi,
Hoping someone has come across this issue previously. My 2010 v70 has the auto open/close tailgate. At the present time we are able to open the tailgate using all three methods: with the fob tailgate button, using the tailgate button on the dash or simply by gently depressing the tailgate handle. All three methods automatically raise the tailgate.

The challenge we are having is that the button on the tailgate does not close the tailgate automatically as it has up until this point. When the button is pressed there is no sound or movement at all from the TG. The only way that we can close it is the old-fashioned way.

I've checked the fuse (it is fine). I pulled the fuse right out and then the TG would not automatically open either so definitely not the fuse. I'm beginning to wonder if it might be the button itself but not quite sure how to troubleshoot further.

Any thoughts?

It does sound like the button has gone faulty . Not had this problem but I would definitely check the button/switch first.

You might have tried this, but if the power is disconnected you need to do a manual open and close cycle to reset it. I recall reading it in the manual when I had to do mine after a service. Even the Volvo technician didn't know what was wrong and gave it back broken saying it needed to be booked in again for diagnosis. If its not that, the butoon pops out easily with a flat blade behind the bezel and you can short the wires to see if that works, which would suggest the button has failed.

Great how these "How to ....." instructions are in the Manual but "we" somehow seem to miss them. Again thanks for posting - must remind myself to read the Manual if all else fails.

Or it could be the boot handle being stuck, my 08 had this issue and it turned out being the handle itself not springing back to its original position when opening 'manually' the handle sits on a pin that rust over time ( the 945 was the same, thought they learned from that...). Try pushing the handle fwd (or down sligtly if boot is open). Re- grease/WD40 etc and it might work again, I tend to use the fob only nowadays for that reason as if its sligtly out I can not close it again using the closing button on the tail gate.

Update:
Well, unfortunately neither the manual reset nor shorting the button has worked...oh oh.

I'm in the process of securing a DICE reader for unrelated reasons so I'm hoping (it's a faint hope only) that some code is logged somewhere in there that would give me a better idea of where the problem lies. I wonder if I there is an easy way to send a 12V signal right to the tailgate motor to see if it closes then? Anyone?

Mine is doing the same, closing with the button intermittently worked then just stopped working altogether,
My tailgate handle rod is rusty but is free, the button does light up but not tried the trick with the button yet, as in pins across the terminals.

I did remove the tailgate panel and found a cable that goes from the tailgate catch to another component attached via the cable which has a motor/gears inside, the plastic bit that locates the cable in the 2nd part of the tailgate catch is broken but the cable moves fine,
I think this part of the tailgate catch pulls the boot closer when you close it gently I think.

So hoping it's the button and not a complete catch unit,
Will try the button and hope you find a fix for yours.

Let me know how you fair...I may cave and bring it in for a consult. If I do, I'll be sure to post an update. It's a super useful feature that we are really missing.

Alright now I'm getting suspicious. In addition to tailgate close button no longer working I have two other symptoms that appeared over the same timeframe. These may or may not be related but as I said I'm a bit suspicious.

1 - as mentioned the button to close tailgate does not function. The power function does work otherwise though for opening the tailgate. Only the auto close function is affected.

2 - I've replaced the rear dome light only to have it blow again two weeks later and

3 - I've had the cryptic "position lamp failure" message appear on my display but can't find a bulb that has burned out.

Starting to wonder whether the rear control module is going bad?
