Default Coolant leak

I have a warning come up on my dash.

Coolant level low stop safely. It went away and then a few minutes later I got coolant level low stop engine.

I checked the coolant and it was just below min. I topped it up but noticed coolant on the right hand side of the engine bay. Its gathered just below the battery, behind the egr valve.

Any ideas what it could be?

The only thing I can think of in that area is the oil cooler. Is there any issues with these leaking or failing?

Best way I know of finding awkward leaks is to add dye to the coolant, then use a UV torch to help identify the source.

It's guesswork otherwise.

Well this evolved rapidly.

Drove 10 miles. Lost nearly all coolant. Can see a fair amount of liquid on the right hand side. Just below and behind egr.

Had to be recovered. Just got back.

Having a strong beer and tomorrow I'll have to loose a days work and try and fix the problem.

I'm sure there is a cooler or something behind there

Any ideas?

On my 2010 D5 the oil cooler is attached to the sump, which is on the right hand side of the car.

If you've lost that much, you should be able to identify the source of the leak is when you top up the cooling system - especially if you can pressurise it.

The sump, as in the bottom of the engine block?

This leak appears to be from the top. Pretty much under the battery.

It was your mention of the oil cooler that prompted my comment.

I don't have a coolant schematic, so can't tell you what might be under the battery.

As I wrote before, much better to inspect than guess.

I hope you managed to get this sorted and at a reasonable cost.

BTW vehicle sides are always identified as if looking forwards. So the right side of the engine bay is on your left if you're facing the rear.

Ah that makes more sense.

So just to be clear, its passenger side of the engine bay.

Here is a picture.

I can see the obvious build up and loss of fluid but cant see where its come from. Iv inspected all houses around that area and all seem ok.

Is there anyway to check if any coolant is making it's way into engine oil or transmission oil? The reason I ask is that I want to run the vehicle and then hopefully identify the source or area of the leak. I dont want to be doing that if there is a more sinister problem.

Hopefully it's a winner
