K&N air filter for petrol 2.5T XC90, is it worth it?
Hello again
I have been meaning to ask and couldnt find much info about this for my 2005 2.5T XC90 petrol... Wanted to check if it is worthwhile putting one in or should I just stick with the paper version inside the air box? They are not exactly cheap (£5x-ish), so wanted to double check. Thank you again. |

I would say yes- as the 2.5T is the 5cylinder petrol engine in the focus st & other fast volvos it would no doubt benefit from a cold air intake/de cat/re map.
All 3 would see a huge improvement! |

Note carefully that de-cat is now illegal in the UK and an instant UK MOT failure
Any tampering with the emissions control systems is an immediate MOT failure My XC90 has an existing Cold Air Intake: the intake air is sucked in at the very front of the vehicle, well ahead of any hot engine components. Re-mapping is another story: mine is remapped and works well. I was observing 1.4 bar of boost and intake air flow of over 400 kmph today

Thank you all for the replies so far and understood about the de-cat.
I will attempt to get the air filter first and look into the re-map. Anyone in the UK for the re-map? Thank you all again. |

Whatever you do, do NOT fit an oil-impregnated air filter. These often stuff up the Mass AirFlow Sensor with oil deposits.

My two penneth - it is probably not worth it.
It is a forced induction engine where the airflow/boost is managed electronically so if a slightly less free-flowing filter is fitted, it just sucks a bit harder on full chat. Hence I doubt you will notice any difference, other than a lighter wallet. If it was a normally aspirated engine like the 3.2 or V8 then I would have a go. You could always take the existing air filter element out and go for a short drive to see if it make any difference...

Tannaton is totally right: the engine management system will out-manage you and any changes you try make to the induction side.

Is it necessary, how much does the stock filter flow? For instance, the stock Saab 93SS filter/airbox is good for 300bhp.
