Default Squeeking Belt & Pulsating Steering (Video)

Hi all

First of all sorry for the first post being a problem/needing help but after 4 days of ownership I'm already in a pickle..

So I bought a 55 plate S60 D5 185bhp 113k miles with FSH, got it cheap as needed a few little bits doing. Unfortunately on test drive I did not notice the pulsating steering and there was no squeeky belt.

Anyway, the aux belt started squeeking 2 days ago, I searched on here and read alot of people having problems with the alternator pulleys. Not wanting to get to involved I dropped it off at local garage, later that day they said it had been sorted, the plastic cover was rubbing on the alt pulley, it was cleaned off and re-fitted, £130 later I come to start the car at the garage and sounded exactly the same! They are taking it back tomorrow to 'fix it'. But I wanted to have a look myself today.

So this is how it sounds, also with a bit of water applied ... https://youtu.be/gFdwSFFcSdc

Any suggestions? I'd rather be able to go back to the garage with a little more knowledge. Is the lower left pulley supposed to have so much movement? I take it this is some sort of dampner? May be stupid question but how to do you release the tension on belt to remove and check pulleys?

Regarding the steering the first job the garage was meant to do was change the fluid, as the fluid in there now is a clear brownish colour, not the green of CHF11s. Could the squeek be related to powersteering pump? (They are changing fluid tomorrow) Im hoping it might make a difference, but I would imagine the rack is on its way out.

Sorry for the rambling first post, just want to get to the bottom of it.

Cheers, Jack.

Your garage may not be honest.

For the steering start first by replacing the fluid with Pentosin, and inspect all screw clamps at the reservoir and at the pump and tighten if needed. Then look inside the reservoir with the engine running and see if the fluid looks like it's foaming.

For the squeaky pulley, I put already a comment in the video, it is critical to drive the least and fix it right away. Try another garage - people here can help recommend on in your area, and use only quality parts - you can buy them online. Ask us which brands and were to purchase them.

Thanks for your reply oragex.

Yes I am fully aware the garage is not being honest, hence me taking covers off to look myself today. To charge £130 + Vat for literally taking a cover off and cleaning it and not actually fixing the problem, is outrageous, and will be dealt with!

My problem is narrowing down which pulley is needed, if its alternator, PS, AC or tensioner. I dont want to start randomally replacing parts and crossing my fingers.

Regarding your information on the steering, thanks, I'll give that a go and see how I get on.

Racing certainty you have alternator pulley trouble. The tensioner pulley movement at idle should be almost nothing.

The cap is missing from the Alternator freewheeling pulley, Easy to find out just remove the aux belt and turn each pulley by hand.
I would replace aux belt and tensioner and Alternator pulley if that's at fault.
Especially if you're gonna keep the car long-term, any history of a change ?

That cap is what had come loose and rubbed/melted itself against the inside of the belt cover.. Whats caused that to happen I dont know.

I just took the car back there where they have promised to sort it out for no extra charge (I now remember why I have never taken a car to a garage for last 12 years).. Unfortunately just dont have the time to mess about with it myself.

I suggested that the tensioner and/or alt pulley need replacing along with belt. He insisted he checked them all yesterday and all in perfect working order.. Awaiting a phonecall!

This. We can't be sure which pulley has an issue and past 110k miles, all pulleys on the alternator clutch (see how to test on youtube), tensioner and a/c compressor have wear on them and may need attention. Very easy to spin them by hand and find out how much wear on each, once the belt is removed.

As for the caps over the alternator and tensioner pulleys, no worry if missing. The tensioner cap is even tricky to undo often times - what I do is just grabbing a long bar, put it against the cap, and tap at the other end gently with a hammer: the cap pops out right away.

There have been discussions on whether to replace the alternator pulley or the alternator altogether with a Bosch unit. Sure thing, don't let a garage install their cheap parts in there, you will be changing them 6-12mths later again. The a/c compressor pulley may need a new bearing, again go with a quality brand (look up youtube)
