Squeaky Engine
So my engine has a rattely squeaky noise... its had it since I got it. Not audible when inside the car.
Its only evident with a cold engine. The noise appears to either be from the alternator or PAS pump. I sprayed some deicer on the belt this morning and it stopped for a second, then a juddery knocking noise, shut up for 10 seconds and then came back. The alternator pulley has been replaced in the past, but its my prime suspect at the moment. Is it possible to test it in situ in any way? Other suggestions welcome... |

If you sprayed some deicer on the belt and the noise went away briefly, I would suggest it could be time to replace the belt.

Did you change the belt when you did the head?
My engine was making hell of a racket, turned out to be mainly the alt pulley - although it was working properly it was dog rough, I only fully tested it when I’d taken it off. Mine was original I thing with 141,000 miles on it. Also had an older or tensioner (can’t remember which) developing a rough spot which was probably contributing to the noise. |

No I didn't do the aux belt at the same time as the cambelt... I did it in January with idler and tensioner (genuine)

Just a thought, have you checked around with a screwdriver type stethoscope? I also had my power steering pump making hell of a racket (squeak/rattle rather than the usual groaning). Changed it for a used one last year.
