Default What engine type is installed in my 240?

Hey everyone,

I'm starting to get deeper into my 84' 240gle wagon, and currently I'm trying to understand exactly which engine is installed in my car.
It has ±380000Km on it so I guess the engine has been replaced over the years.

Some information:
1. The VIN says B23A.
2. The timing cover says 1289252 B230F NR:11572
3. Near the distributor, on the engine cylinder head I can see the numbers 5891.
4. There is the letter "K" on the left side of the engine block.
5. On the right side of the cylinder head there is the number 1000530

So is it a B23A? B230F? a combination of everything? a mixture of parts?

Why? 236,000 miles is absolutely nothing to a 240. I've had three that have done that on the original engine, one did 430,000 on original untouched engine, clutch, brake disks, gearbox, and steering rack.

It's running a carb consistent with the B23A VIN. It's not an "F", which have electronic fuel injection. The 530 head was on both, so it doesn't answer the question. The "K" cast into the block suggests it's an '88 or '89 B230 block (see https://people.physics.anu.edu.au/~a...230_engine.htm). So I would say it's been turned into a B230A by someone.

A quick and basic check is to count the number of bolts on the crank shaft pulley: 1 large bolt makes it a B200/B230; 6 small ones indicate a B21/B23.

Timing belt covers can be swapped over easily so the sticker on the cover isn't definitive.

The car should be a B23A
Carb and manifold match a B23A
The powersteering pump is also correct for a B23

The head is clearly B200/230 and the belt cover also

What you describe of the block also sounds like a late B230 (B23 is a pressed steel and B230 is cast)

A B230F would be a good engine to convert to a carb so is likely that is what you have. The problem with the F is it has a rubbish cam so if your engine feels very flat the cam will be the issue. If you swap to the B23A cam it will pull much better

Just to be clear the 530 head was only used on the B200/230 family and never factory fitted to the B17/19/21/23 family engine

No Injector holes in the head so not a 'F' engine. Also has the hot start valve on the firewall so i would guess always has been a 'A' car.

Injectors sit in the inlet manifold, not the head.
