Default XC60 2010 front suspension noise when

Can anyone tell me of common issues on the front suspension,
it sounds like a creaking noise over bumps and gets quieter once driven for a while but is still there.
I'm thinking ARB bushes or drop links, maybe top mounts but doesn't do it lock to lock.

You could try to lubricate your ARB bushes with something like silicone spray first and see if the noise goes away. If it does than I'd start with changing the front ARB bushes first as they are the least expensive of the three possibilities and most likely to cause the creaking over bumps scenario you describe.
Worn drop links would make more of a metallic rattly sound if they were very worn.

It was the strut top mount, for anyone who comes across this in the future.

I've been a mechanic for 20+ years and never seen it before as once it was removed the top mount and bearing looked perfect but replaced it while it was off and it's cured it.

I've had this a few times on XC90's - they look okay but the adhesive has broken down between the metal insert and the rubber and hence the creaking and knocking.

The main issue here is most pattern parts are sh*te. This is one of the many times where genuine Volvo is the way forward. I fitted some on my own XC90 a few years ago and they only lasted 15-20k.

Replaced it with a middle of the road Febi Bilstein so we'll see,
I'll do the other side when I get time.

Unusual but its a rubber / metal high load part so in hindsight it makes sense. You say: it looked perfect ... what made you think it was it and change it anyway ? and was it the nearside top mount by any chance ?

To be fair Febi Bilstein make high quality OEM parts for the likes of BMW, VAG, etc and I personally consider then in the upper quality bracket rather than middle of the road. Not quite "LEMFORDER" but IMHO up there with the best of them

I went through all the suspension bushes with a pry bar with the vehicle on the Lift, removed the drop links and moved the ARB to check for squeaky bushes,
and as a last resort replaced the top mount when nothing was obvious.

If you don’t mind me asking, when changing the top strut mounts, what is the correct instruction for the alignment tab on the anti-friction bearing?
