Looking forward to getting my XC60 in a couple of weeks and thought I'd ask the question on "running in" what's the thoughts on distance and revs? Know they tend to bench tested but thought I'd ask the question.

My 10 pence worth: give it some work to do straight away, don't baby it ... if you can do so in the first 15 to 20 minutes of driving, find an open road or dual carriageway and accelerate three or four times using about half throttle in 4th gear from around 1,750rpm to about 3,000rpm, as if you were overtaking a caravan or lorry on an A-road.

After that, just don't let the motor 'lug' too much below 1,500rpm in a high gear, and don't redline it using full throttle. That's about it.

3,000rpm in 4th is about 70mph, in 5th it's over 90mph and in 6th it's 120mph, so it's hard to thrash these cars

Simply speak to the dealer when you collect the car - he will tell you what Volvo recommend and that is a lot more sensible than taking the variable advice you will get here

Google Honest John, running in a diesel. He gives a set of things to do over the first few weeks. As has been said modern diesels like a bit of oompphh to loosen things up, bed in seals etc. Gone are days of driving like a nun for the first few weeks.

Get a few hundred miles on it, and then take it for a trip
We took a steady run to Scotland over Easter and by the time we came home we were well run in and motoring in fine style

The only thing I've seen about a modern car is do not hammer the brakes for the first thousand miles or so otherwise, usual common sense, keep the revs down until the temp gauge hits 70C.

Oh! you can't do that because you no longer have a temp gauge...burger !

This is good advice. I would work the engine a bit, once warm, right from the earliest opportunity. Don't thrash it, but load it up a bit and vary the revs as much as you can for the first few thousand miles.

This is an interesting article. No saying you follow it or that I agree with it, but worth reading....

If you have the TFT dash, Performance theme without cruise on gives you a temp gauge.

However, it's water temp, not oil temp....!
