Software Driven Electronics.

Most electronic main units on post 2000 model year cars once fitted and the software uploaded to them become chassis specific - in other words THEY WILL NOT WORK IN ANOTHER VEHICLE.

These include radio/stereo head units (AUM), CD players (IAM), self dipping rear view mirrors (UEM), speedo heads (DIM) and several others to name but a few.

The dealers cannot over write the software in these units. Also second hand integrated key fobs (KIR) cannot be re-programmed to another car even by the dealers. Although these need a software download to be programmed, the dealer also needs the two unique codes that are supplied with the original packaging for each remote. These codes are not kept on record.

so all the time & effort making cars more enviromentally friendly emmission wise is nicely being counteracted by not being able to recycle components, instead any car written off in a crash is no good to anyone & has to be left to rot. Sound like a good plan to me

But then from a theft point of view there's not much point in someone nicking the car for parts either ...

I'm sure there's an element of both to be honest. I'm also surprised at the list - why the rear view mirror but not the climate control unit for example? Or is it just 'cos it's not a complete list?

i agree with what your saying but SAAB use a similiar system (or did pre-vauxhall) but were quite happy for main dealers to "divorce" an item from a car & "marry" it to another for you. Its all about the money

Default xc90 infotainment control module

Not sure that is correct about electronic units being chassis specific.I had a problem with my stereo in an xc90,told by the main dealer that it was scrap and needed a new one(£850 to supply and fit)).
Bought one from a salvage yard fitted it and it works perfectly.

Default Phatbox/Digital Dukebox

Hi all,
Just near Pooped my pants... all this about the Stereo and changing out etc having an effect of the car..

I have an S60 d5 se 2002/2003 and want to put an digital dukebox in it..

As my car has the hu-803 which can run a rear Cd player.. even though it was not fitted as an option the head unit has the din output.

Will be the Digital Dukebox or Phatbox connect up to it.. will this be recognised by the head unit. More importantly.. will the car still work

can anyone out there help me.. some place i have seen say this will work..

do not want to go through the pain of fitting the system only to break the car..

Hi m19pjo,

I have a Phatbox connected to the HU803 in my 53 plate V70. It went in with no problems at all other than getting the Melbus cable (not prepped for ac CD changer or RTI) up to the back of the head unit. Have had it in to the dealers since for a new key/remote to be coded without any Volvo software problems.

Phil
