Default Noisy exhaust

On a fairly light throttle (cruising or gentle acceleration) in certain rev ranges the exhaust on my 2008 D5 is getting a little noisy - it sounds as thought it's from the rear. It looks OK and sailed through a recent MOT. Does anyone know if replacement is likely to be the only option?

It may be a broken baffle corroded inside the box and if you take the box off and shake and tip it, the broken piece might fall out. It might be too big or still partly attached. Or it may be that corrosion has opened gas pathways causing reverberation at certain flow levels with which you either live or replace the box.

Thank you Tatsfield - it seems more like resonance than a metallic noise, so replacement sounds like the solution.

Last half exhaust system I baught from volvo 6 years ago cost me £300. In fairness the old one was 17 years and near 200,000 miles old.

Yikes (£300) - maybe I'll put up with the noise!

Today that £300 is probably going to be more. For this sort of money you could buy a bespoke stainless steel exhaust system which would last forever and improve the performance of your car. I ran Peugeot 406 Coupes for 15 years and had them all fitted with Powerflow stainless systems and was well pleased with them and with the increase in power output that a free flow exhaust can provide. You can have the style and the noise output designed to your own requirements. I always went for minimal noise increases.

That's a thought (stainless steel). The local Volvo dealer quotes £280 for the back box, with a very decent 20% VOC discount. It looks as though the (presumably pattern) part may be available at around £160.

IMO original or stainless if you can afford it. I’ve found pattern to be false economy as they don’t last but sometimes one simply cannot afford anything better.
