Why so bad??

Despite the car doing 500km on the motorway - that left 245km of town driving. But still 32.4??

It has been very cold over here - and I have to do a 3 or 4 cold starts - IE engine on and outside scraping the snow and ice off the car - or worse still snow that has turned into ice!! For the conditions I am not surprised.
I think you've answered your own question. 50% town use, defrosting the car and this has been the coldest December for 30 years. Thermal efficiency declines dramtically in cold weather. Something the car manufacturers and Government never mention in their mpg figures.

I think a heavy car (400kg more than my S70, for example...which is hardly a lightweight) and a slushmatic don't help, either. I'm currently averaging between 28-30mpg in the S70 in mixed town / dual carriageway work (but never flat / long enough to be 'cruise' conditions). Although I imagine it's quite a lot colder in Ken's neck of the woods, it's rarely notably above freezing in the mornings here, and I'm also doing the 'leaving it running on the drive (locked!)' thing.

I think the weight and slusher are taking a sizeable edge off the benefit of the diesel engine.

cheers

James

As a rough estimate I'd say you can expect about 3 to 4 mpg less in the winter from my mpg records. Looking in Diesel Car magazine that's the sort of figure that their long term Citroen ZX test gives as well.

Still snow on the roofs - and I am hardly in the middle of nowhere - first community outside Zurich. Head south of the Alps and it is crazy - huge levels of snow. The resorts are fantastic at the moment - plenty of snow, sun, and powder.

To give you an idea - on Friday I defrosted the car - there was 10cm of snow over the entire car - and the bottom 1-2cm on the roof was ICE. SOLID ICE. We drove 80miles along the motorway (0c), then overnight, then the next day in temperatures up to 5c - and then when we drove it the ice had almost finished melting!!!
