The vibration / Rattle was evident all the time. The Vibration noise came from the grey/black plastic engine cover. Which I found out, had a broken location hinge at the rear, which caused the noise. Not cheap to replace! This is normally caused by heavy handed Technicians when being serviced. Other causes of engine cover vibration can be due to eroded rubber grommets.

I recall hearing somewhere the newer D5 (2004 on) has some sort of recirculating catalyst or something that burns off all the soot deposits etc, but in doing so uses lots of fuel in itself. Hence lower MPG.

I dont think I would touch anything Volvo past 2004 these days.

Default 2005 Coated Diesel Particulate Filter

Looks like this is the thing. If it keeps going in to recycle mode the mpg will suffer badly.

Poor mpg - http://tinyurl.com/72eu65

Particulate filter is standard
All versions of the new diesel engine have a particulate filter as standard equipment. It very effectively removes soot particulates from the exhaust gases, with filtration efficiency above 95 percent.

The filter is a CDPF – Coated Diesel Particulate Filter – in which a special coating helps burn the particulates. Therefore, no additives are needed, and the filter requires no maintenance. Burning away soot particulates takes approximately 20 minutes and occurs automatically at 500 to 1000km intervals, depending on driving conditions.

I have the S60 163bhp D5 T and it does 40 running around and 55ish on a run. Don't think I will be looking to upgrade any time soon by the look of it.

Good approach. You have the Eu III which is good for 50+MPG on a run as you point out - we are lucky to see 40+. (Could get over 65MPG on a long run out of the 163bhp if I thought about it )

I personally would be back in a Generation II V70 D5 163 Eu III and ECU/Chip to 205ish BHP, if depreciation hit on my Generation III was not a key factor.

I think it's more likely that the extra weight of the newer cars (200kg heavier, on average) is the critical factor...plus many of you guys seem to have slushers, which doesn't help! Maybe there's something in the new emissions stuff, but I'd look squarely at the weight, first of all. It's coming to something when a 240 is a lightweight alternative! (~1450kg for a 245, vs ~1775kg for a new V70)

One interesting thing is that it's now VERY hard to find phase 2 V70 T5s that aren't ex-plod. A few weeks ago I looked at VCUK's car finder (having found nothing on eBay), and they had 2 T5s against 88 D5s. Crikey...

cheers

James

Agree that the two biggest factors are:
  • DPF
  • Weight

Bought my V70 "blind" but will be going back to a MB as my main car when I sell this V70. Sadly a preowned E55 or RS6 is my preference over the current V70.

On the subject of T5's there are a couple of ok'ish ones on 2006 at ~60K near Manchester - Autotrader.

Each to his own. I had an E class and thought the engine and gearbox were great but the instruments body and finish! Not in the same class as my previous 3 Volvo's. I went back to Volvo after 3 months.
