On my 2003 V70 D5 I get an average of over 50 mpg. I asked this same question and oil burner replied:

Two big changes: more weight and a dreaded Diesel Particulate Filter.

2003 V70 D5 Auto: 1577kg (no DPF)
2008 V70 D5 Auto: 1877kg (with DPF)

That 300kgs is like carrying around 10 fully grown Labradors (plus yourself) all the time!!

The DPF regenerates about every 300-500 miles and takes about 25 miles of driving to complete the process. Whilst doing this it burns extra fuel (to clear out the soot), some say around 75-100% extra fuel is burnt during this process. That means that if crusing along doing 40mpg and the DPF re-generation kicks in, for the next 25 miles you'll be getting only 20mpg!!!

Just to be clear, it's not the DPF that adds the 300kgs, but the combination of the extra weight and the use of a DPF that is sapping the fuel economy on the latest D5s in the new Volvos.

I regularly get around 430-450 miles out of a tank of petrol in my V70 ('00, 113K, 140bhp), low to mid 30's mpg.

I'm not shy with the right foot but do use cruise control a lot even to speed up/slow down, happy with that compared to the diesels especially with the price difference per litre.

At what point did the DPFs get introduced? This is all very interesting, given that I'm considering upgrading to a late P2 V70 D5...

cheers

James

Ah, knickers...so if I want the new lights and the 6-speed box...I'm out of luck?

I guess it's a 163bhp 5-speed and swap out the lights, then

...or get a petrol version and put a gas conversion on it...

cheers

James

It's been a little high here at some more 'rural' stations, but it's a little over half the price of petrol at most places.

Also the 2003 D5 and the 2008 D5 are effectivley different engines as they have so many differences.

The "difference" is considerable. My V70 Tdi classic is currently showing 49 mpg average and I've checked it against actual fill-up and miles travelled. Let's say a petrol V70 does 30mpg average. Over 1 year doing 12000 miles the diesel uses 245 gallons, the petrol uses 400. If diesel is, say, 95p a litre and petrol is 87p then the Tdi is saving about £525. The petrol car might perform better, especially a T5, but is the glint in your eye worth £10 a week? Your call. Regards.
