A new radiator fixed it.
Thinking as to why there is no oil in the water:, all oil cooler connections I've come across had screw on fittings, these ones are push fit with a safety clip therefore have to be low pressure. The pressure in the coolant must be greater for it to go one way. PS avoid Nissens brand, these come with a saw cut through the top and bottom frames. Apparently this is to stop the radiator warping.... which seems a bit strange to me as the radiator coolant tubes and brackets are made of aluminium so should expand at the same rate. I returned it. Thanks for letting us know how things turned out. Knowing how a problem was resolved is so useful to the rest of us.
