Engine has intermittant fault and often blowing blue smoke
Hi,
I have a 1997 Volvo V40 2.0 petrol non turbo, It recently dveloped an intermittamt issue where i suddenly get a lot of vibration and hesitation from the engine and intermittent significant loss of power at the same time. It also blows blue smoke occasionally and a lot when, ( sometimes ) accellerating or coming off the highway. I took it to my mechanic to check it out, Got compression tests done; Results 160 - 180 psi, no cylinder below 160. He suspects the valve stem seals, does anybody have any ideas or can confirm this diagnosis. Exhaust stinks like hell, Cheers John |

Have you driven it like a nun for its life? If so it does sound the likely culprit.

Thanks Anadinolan,
Haven't been too hard on it, currently has 195K Km on the clock, I have had it since 145K KM 2 1/2 years ago. Mechanic now reckons it might be the oil seals as on investigation the valve stems are protected by a a shield that prevents excess oil entering the top of the stem. may need a new engine ?? Luckily I have fitted 4 new tyres in Jan when it was still running fine. |

Problem Solved
Hi Everyone,
I have investigated the problem more and found a different mechanic that is Volvo accredited. They identified the problem as a faulty ignition coil which they replaced during the diagnosis session. Very professional, efficient and knowledgeable, if anyone needs a Volvo Mechanic in Adelaide I would recommend, "Pulse Auto", absolutely top Class. They have noted that this will also have contributed to the Smoke issue. Cheers John |
