Talking 1200 miles in 2 days

Took my daughter to Aberdeen University which was a 1200 mile round trip. Car was loaded, including the kitchen sink. Went up one day and back the next. She didnt miss a beat all the way there and back. Not bad for and old girl with 136K on the clock and a 1.8 petrol (non GDI). Will be holding on to her for a few years as daughter is on 4 years masters course and will need transporting as they do.

What sort of economy did you get for the trip?

Default Fuel cost

Total cost for fuel was £160.00. Which i dont think was excessive as on the way there the back of the car was loaded down. Daughter is a 1st year, so took EVERYTHING including the kitchen sink. Would have had better economy in a diesel, but i use what i have.

That's good going gazzer ,the diesel wouldn't be far behind that I don't think. I've never done 1200 miles in mine,I got from Paignton in Devon to Southampton not far you and I did it on £20-30 quid there and back, maybe one of the diesel heads have done a big trip like you but I wouldn't think the diesel would be much more better.

Tbh I find it hard sticking to 60mph which would give you optimum fuel economy,as it feels slow and the s40 wants to gallop and eat the miles up lol.cruise would be nice to have, also a 6th gear sometimes I feel with my diesel a 6th gear is needed especially on a m/way situation.

Thats actually quite good. I reckon that equates to low 40's MPG which as you say, considering the size of the load you were carrying is impressive.

Depends on the diesel Kieran. A V40 1.9d would probably have got around 60mpg according to what I've seen posted on here over the years. However being reasonably light car and a manual does help.

My V70 with it being a D5 Geartronic would probably have just matched the MPG, but with having to pay a few pennies more per litre for fuel. However manuals would add a few more MPG to that and the 2.0D and especially the Drive 1.6 diesel would be more into the 60's like the V40 renault 1.9D

I've got a manual 1.9d Simon I find if you stick to 60 mph you can get stupid mileage out of the fuel, but it's hard sticking to it,mine just loves to gallop along at 80mph it will sit all day at that and not break into a sweat.ive always meant to sit at 60 from here to Kent but It always goes out the window that idea lol.next time I go up I will find out what mine is doing properly.ive always just filled the tank and gone, but I can do it on less than half a tank up there so I guess it's in the 50's somewhere, and it's just shy of 300 miles one way and that's at 70/80mph or sometimes 90mph if I feel the need to munch the miles on the m25.but it does it without breaking into a sweat.

Yeah I understand Kieran. My D5 is at 2,000rpm at 70mph and 2-3,000rpm is where I get peak torque of 400Nm. The driveability in that peak torque zone is brilliant and it's easy to press on and find the speedo creeping up, however one look at the current MPG consumption is enough to bring it back down again.

I haven't got a computer on mine Simon,it might make me think twice if I did ,and you only get to youre destination 10 minutes earlier, but I just find it impossible to sit at 60mph.its almost as if the volvo doesn't like it either it wants you to gallop along

Mine's the same Kieran. About 60 to 63 and I get high 50's but have to physically hold it back. Its more at home around 75. Does your engine seem quieter at that speed?
